What free sports club software actually costs

Free sports club platforms are real — Spond, TeamLinkt's core and SportEasy's team plan cost nothing upfront — but each one monetizes elsewhere: Spond takes 2.5% plus €0.20 on every payment, TeamLinkt charges a payment fee plus paid add-ons, and SportEasy's free plan stops at 30 members per team, with club plans from €0.33 per member per month. At a 200-player club collecting €150 a season, every route lands around €700–800 a year — more than the entry plan of a fixed-price club CRM. Here is the math, taken from each vendor's own pricing pages.

The three shapes of "free"

Everything advertised as free club software falls into one of three shapes. First, free platform with a payment cut: the software costs nothing and the vendor lives on a percentage of what you collect (Spond, TeamLinkt's core). Second, freemium with caps: one team or a limited member count is free, and the club level is billed per member (SportEasy). Third, the time-boxed trial: full access for 30 days, then paid (SportEasy's club plans, Kananas). None of these is a trick — each one funds real product development. The trap is only comparing sticker prices of 0 against 0 instead of the effective annual cost.

Spond: free, and 2.5% + €0.20 on every payment

Spond's app and club tools are free, and the cost arrives on payments: 2.5% plus €0.20 per transaction in its listed EUR countries (Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland and the Netherlands — Spain is not on that list), 2.5% plus £0.20 in the UK and 3.29% plus $1.00 in the US, per Spond's own fee table. By default the club absorbs the fee; you can pass it to families at checkout instead. Fundraising works the same way: the Spond Superdraw is free to set up, but the club keeps 65% of entries sold and Spond retains the other 35%. On a 200-player club collecting €150 a season — 200 payments totalling €30,000 — a Spond-style fee leaves roughly €790 a year on the table.

SportEasy: free for one team, per-member pricing for the club

SportEasy's free tier lives at team level: a Basic plan capped at 30 members with limited features. The club level has no free plan — registering the club is free with a one-month trial, then Classic costs €0.45 per member per month (€5.40 a year) or €0.33 per member per month on annual billing (€3.96 a year), and the Sponsors tier runs €0.48 per member per month (€5.76 a year). Billing is "fair": you pay only for active members, and non-member parents are free. For our 200-member example club, annual Classic billing is 200 × €3.96 — about €792 a year.

TeamLinkt: $0 forever, a fee in the middle, add-ons at the edges

TeamLinkt's core is genuinely $0 forever — registrations, payments, scheduling, a team app and a website, used by 3,500+ organizations. The money moves to the middle and the edges: a transaction fee on the money you collect (the exact rate is quoted by their sales team), and optional add-ons — tournaments and officials, fundraising, a store — at $425–795 a year. Over half of TeamLinkt's organizations pass the transaction fee to families at checkout. A club that needs any add-on is already at $425–795 a year on top of whatever the payment fee collects.

The break-even math: when free stops being the cheapest

Put the same 200-player, €30,000-a-season club against each option: a Spond-style payment fee costs about €790 a year, SportEasy's club plan about €792, and TeamLinkt with a single add-on $425–795 before any payment fee — while FutbolCRM, a football-specific club CRM, publishes fixed plans from €49 a month, or €588 a year, with per-family fee reconciliation and AI agents that chase grants and sponsors included. Around this volume, the fixed-price CRM undercuts every "free" route. The honest flip side: below roughly 50 players, or for a volunteer-run club with modest fee volume, free platforms are the right call — the comparison number is the effective annual cost, not zero.

Verdict

"Free" is the right price for a volunteer club with modest fee volume — the platforms above are good at what they do. The number to compare is effective annual cost, not the sticker: at 200 players and €30,000 collected, Spond-style fees, SportEasy's per-member club plan and TeamLinkt-with-add-ons all land around €700–800 a year — past the €588 of the entry plan of a fixed-price club CRM that also reconciles fees per family and hunts grants and sponsors with AI agents.

When to choose The alternative

Stay free when the club is volunteer-run, collects little money — under roughly 50 players is the rule of thumb in our buying guide — or the payment cut is an acceptable trade for a $0 platform cost. Move to a paid club CRM when per-player structure (documents, family contacts, fee status), reconciled per-family reporting and new-money outreach matter more than the subscription.

FAQ

What operators ask before they sign.

What is the best free sports club management software?

For a genuinely $0 core, TeamLinkt is the strongest offer — registrations, payments, scheduling, team app and website for 3,500+ organizations, monetized with a payment fee and paid add-ons. Spond is excellent for communication and payments where its fee applies (2.5% + €0.20 in its listed EUR countries). SportEasy is free per team up to 30 members. At real club scale — 200 players, €30,000 in fees — every free route lands around €700–800 a year in fees or per-member billing, which is when fixed-price club CRMs from €49 a month become cheaper than free.

Is Spond really free for clubs?

The app and club tools are free. Costs appear on money movement: Spond Club takes 2.5% + €0.20 per transaction in its listed EUR countries (Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands — Spain is not on the list), 2.5% + £0.20 in the UK, and 3.29% + $1.00 in the US. On fundraising, the club keeps 65% of Superdraw entries and Spond retains 35%. By default the club covers the fee; families can be charged instead.

How much does a football club CRM cost compared to free platforms?

FutbolCRM publishes fixed plans — from €49/month (Pro Club €149/month), €588 a year at entry — with per-player files, per-family fee reconciliation and AI agents for grants and sponsors included. The free routes cost their effective annual rate instead: about €790 in Spond-style payment fees or €792 in SportEasy club billing for a 200-player, €30,000-a-season club. Under roughly 50 players, free platforms remain the sensible choice; past that volume the fixed-price CRM is usually cheaper than "free".
